The Narrative In The Landscape: Growing Up

Project Statement

I chose to focus on the narrative within the landscape, I decided to follow my past self from the beginning until the end. I retraced my footsteps from when I first began school in my hometown until I ended it, I tried to convey how I felt not only during each of the time periods but also how I felt as I reflected and took these pictures. Each of the schools I attended before college resided within my hometown, all relatively close and all with relatively small student bodies and staff, each of these places is really special to me because of the memories created with and by others at these places. Leaving each place and entering the next was hard and scary but the experience gained from each was invaluable and special.

Reflection

This project was a lot more introspective than I originally anticipated it to be, going to all of these places where I essentially grew up and became the person I am today was something I never thought I would do but something I’m glad I did. Originally when I set out on this project I was going to photograph a historical site but decided this narrative of growing up was something I liked more and had more potential. When composing these photos I wanted to show something of my experience within each of these places, they were all places with a beginning, middle, and an end so I wanted to show that. They were all places of growth and I wanted to show that, especially in the middle photograph. Overall I tried to show the tone of each experience of my growing up with the composition and feel of each photograph and in my eyes it was achieved.
