Project Statement
The directive for this project was to consider how light affects our photography, consider how the differences of light create different feelings within a photograph. Then use these difference to sculpt a series of photos that reflect light as a metaphor within your own eyes. My approach to this project was to construct scenes where the presence of light or the absence of light was not only noticable but very telling, I wanted to create photographs that had light and dark interacting in unique ways. I wanted to highlight scenes that are ordinary, but show them from a different angle from one may consider, or I wanted to create a scene that highlighted light.
Reflection
Throughout the process of capturing the images for this project, the main idea that became clear to me was the power of how light is framed. The angle at which light hits an object, the harshness or softness of the light, the magnitude of the light, the placement of the source of the light, and the type of light are all extremely important, but all were things I did not fully consider or appreciate before this project. The importance of the camera in relation to these aspects of light is something that surprised me during the process. My previous use of mainly phone cameras did not prepare me for the significance of aperture size and shutter speed on the exposure of the picture, mastering the alteration of these to create quality photos was a priority. Once this was done the final piece was framing of light, which for me was the difference between a quality photo and a subpar photo, I tried to focus on the meeting of light and dark in my photos, and I feel as if I did this well.
