In the 3 weeks of classes we’ve had so far, it has become pretty clear that choosing this MILA over other classes that would’ve fulfilled the IL requirement was the right choice. Originally I found out about the class from my advisor, Dr. Walther. I was looking for a course to fulfill my IL requirement, but it was very hard to find one that fits considering that I was also trying to complete my economics minor. My advisor suggested the possibility of a MILA course, I was originally hesitant since I wasn’t sure that I wanted that commitment of going away for 2 weeks. I then realized that a MILA course would be the perfect compromise for me. As because of responsibilities at school and the timeline of classes I needed to take for dental school I was never to go abroad, which was something that I really wanted to do. I saw that taking a MILA course would allow me to get a taste of what going abroad would be like, so I started looking for a course I would be interested in.
Again my advisor helped me along and directed me to this MILA and it could not have been a better fit. As again I was looking to finish my economics minor while also being able to experience a new place under the context of a class. This class was the perfect fit as it would allow me to go someplace completely new, Cape Town, while also filling my last requirement for my economics minor. Once I got beyond the simple requirements that the class needed to meet to fit my whole game plan for college I began to actually look into the class and what I would be doing. I realized that the class would cover a lot of areas that I’m interested in on a new place and topics that I wasn’t familiar with. I really enjoy learning about history, anthropology, economics and kind of just civilations and how they came to be. So this class seemed to be the perfect combination of interests as well as necessities for me which really drew me to the class.
